FAQ About All Natural Products

What does the INCI name (name in brackets on the label) mean?

INCI stands for the International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients. It is a system for naming cosmetic ingredients that is multilingual, multinational and based on the Latin language. The INCI labelling system was designed in 1973 and developed over a period of more than 30 years. It was created by the American Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association’s International Nomenclature Committee and the INCI system forms the basis of the International Cosmetic Ingredient (ICI) Dictionary and Handbook (currently in its Tenth edition).

The Dictionary and Handbook presents, in detail, the bulk of INCI names juxtaposed with their corresponding empirical chemical formulas, technical/trade names, Chemical Abstracts System numbers (CAS No.), or alternate numbers. This allows for the unambiguous identification of ingredients. Health Canada, along with other government and industry representatives, is a participant of the International Nomenclature Committee which determines the INCI name assigned to each cosmetic ingredient. INCI is the mandatory nomenclature in the United States, the European Union, and now Canada.

Why do we need mandatory ingredient labelling?

Previously, the Cosmetic Regulations did make a number of requirements concerning the labelling of cosmetic products, however, they did not require ingredient listing. Mandatory ingredient listing will enhance the safety of the Canadian public by making available to the public valuable information concerning the composition of cosmetics. Ingredient lists will provide the public with information that will allow them to avoid products which contain an ingredient to which they may be sensitive. Additionally, this initiative will provide medical professionals with ready access to the ingredients in the product, thus allowing them to provide effective medical care should the need arise. The use of the INCI system allows uniform and consistent information to be delivered to both health professionals and the public.

How do you keep your products so fresh?

Our products are made in a small baking facility in Mississauga ON. We produce our products by hand in small batches to ensure its freshness. We do not use heavy machinery or large industrial equipment to make our products.

Why does my product look and feels different than the last time I received it?

We use raw ingredients in our products. Due to climate and location of some ingredients the texture may vary at different times of the year. We do our best to ensure that all batches are produced the same however, the consistency may vary during certain times of the year. Please contact us if your product has a different consistency.

Heitman Cosmetics are made with all natural raw ingredients. For this reason your products may contract at different times of the year. For instance, in the spring/summer months your products are exposed to more heat and humidity and may seem softer. During the fall/winter months your products are exposed to colder temperatures therefore the consistency may become harder.

Please take the following steps to maintain the quality of your product.

  • Avoid using your hands to scoop cream/lotion out of the jar. If you must use your hands ensure they are clean.
  • Store your products in room temperature away from sunlight if possible. This will help maintain the quality of the raw ingredients and essential oils.
  • Keep all lids and caps on in-between uses. This will help eliminate the possibility of dirt and dust entering the product.

What is the shelf life of your products?

Heitman Cosmetics are all natural and organic, for these reasons our products have a shelf life of 6 – 8 months however, you can extend the shelf life by 1 – 2 months by placing your products in the refrigerator once purchased. We have performed in house shelf life duration and bacteria/contamination testing.

Our products are currently being tested for shelf life duration and bacteria/contamination in a professional lab. We look forward to sharing the information with you once we receive the results. It may be 4 – 6 months before we receive results.

*Heitman Cosmetics are not tested on animals*
